Indulge your cravings this year

Warm up with seasonal food and drink in Oregon wine country

Dig deeper into the Yamhill Valley's food and wine culture

When the weather is cold and wet, what's a traveler to do? We just might have some ideas.

In the Willamette Valley, we don't let  winter stop us from savoring Oregon Wine Country. In fact, it's the perfect time to feast on hearty food; warm up with ciders, ales, and wines; and enjoy seasonal specialties (like Oregon's famous wild truffles) that are at their height only during the cold-weather months.

So read on, and we'll help you plan a perfectly indulgent winter get-away.

A "Mushroom Madness" tasting sampler from the Joel Palmer House restaurant in Yamhill Valley.

The Yamhill area has been called one of the "foodiest" places in the country, and every winter when grape harvest is complete, the valley's chefs and winemakers let their passions run wild during "Dig Our Valley." This wintertime exploration of all things food and wine invites visitors to dig deeper into the Yamhill Valley's culinary riches.

What you can find in the Yamhill Valley this winter:

  • Every month is "Epicurean Excursion" month, when visitors can taste limited-time food and wine pairings like The Joel Palmer House's special "Mushroom Sunshine" menu, available only in winter.

  • Every month is also "Oenophile's Outings" month; relax in cozy tasting rooms and enjoy personal visits with winemakers.

Other Winery Spotlights:

lasource.jpgAn Oregon pinot noir came in at No. 3 on Wine Spectator's annual list of the world's top 100 wines, the magazine announced Monday. That would be Evening Land Vineyards' 2012 Eola-Amity Hills Seven Springs Vineyard La Source Pinot Noir, which Wine Spectator called "seductive, silky and supple." The ranking shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. In January, the influential magazine gave the wine a 98-point score, the highest rating ever for a wine produced in Oregon.

Other Oregon wines on the list included Big Table Farm's 2012 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir at No. 11, Bergström's 2013 Ribbon Ridge Le Pré Du Col Vineyard Pinot Noir at No. 13, Soléna's 2012 Willamette Valley Grande Cuvée Pinot Noir at No. 38 and Colene Clemens' 2012 Chehalem Mountains Margo Pinot Noir at No. 45.

  1. Featured: Oak Ridge Vineyard -

Marlene and Thomas Woodward began farming Oak Ridge Vineyard in 1995. Their ten acre, certified organic vineyard is perched high on the eastern slopes of the White Salmon Valley facing south towards Mt. Hood. At 1,400 feet elevation, the vineyard is bathed in just enough sunlight to bring out the spicy, concentrated flavors of the classic cool weather varietals -- Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.

Grapes from Oak Ridge Vineyard can be enjoyed in wines made by Analemma Wines in Mosier, Oregon, Viento in Hood River, and Brooks and Bethel Heights wineries in the Eola Hills of Oregon.

Learn more about Oak Ridge Vineyard on our website.

Do you know which is the best winery in Oregon wine country this month?

Of course there are dozens, even hundreds of great wineries in our fertile wine country valleys.  But the best for us this week was...

  1. Phelps Creek Vineyards in Hood River - We visited Phelps Creek on 7/25 & 7/27.  They offered nice service, were very friendly and 'comped' all the tasting fees for our groups!  Nice location at a golf course.   J

  2. Marchesi Vineyards in Hood River - "Great tasting wine". J

Have you met Vignette?

In 2012, to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, we wanted to do something special.  We wanted to create a remarkable wine and put it in a memorable package.

The result of this desire was our Vignette -- a Pinot Noir from two of our favorite Willamette Vall
ey vineyards*.

The wine is a beauty.  Bright red fruits, soft mineral notes, orange rind, and even an exotic edge (sandalwood?).  It will age wonderfully, yet lands softly, and is ready to be enjoyed today.

The bottle is unforgettable. It's covered in hand-written p
oetry and topped with a glass Vino-Lok closure.

*  The 2011 Vignette comes from two of our warmer sites -- 69% Daffodil Hill Vineyard, 31% Hirschy Vineyard.  These vineyards are known for producing lovely and complex wines that are ready without an extended wait.

For a wonderful 2011 Vignette experience, we recomment serving it with a classic Coq au Vin with Mushrooms; NW Cedar Plank Grilled Salmon; or a Goat Cheese Thyme, and Carmalized Onion Tart.
