Traveling A "World Of Wine In 40 Miles"

"With double volcano views of Mt Hood and Mt Adams, America's most unique AVA*** features wild beauty, traffic free touring, relaxed tasting rooms and European style white and BIG RED French, Italian and Spanish varietals.  Using traditional winemaking techniques or wine blends, the winemakers produce anything from Alberiňo and Zinfindel (11%) to Syrah (9%) and Merlot (6%) to Pinot Noir (31%) and Chardonnay (8%) and 37 other varietals. It's like traveling a "World of Wine in 40 miles".

Some terroirs speak in gradations of nuance, Burgundy for instance.  The Gorge is the opposite. As one races from sea level to alpine heights and moves from rainforest to desert with extreme geographic & climate changes; there is an amazing diversity of grapes grown here. Nearly any expression of wine is possible. The Gorge wineries are an exploration of the expressions of Gorge wine.

The Hood River Valley is eerily similar to the Napa Valley of 70 years ago, cooler, and filled with orchards before the vineyards came. The Columbia Gorge is a potential paradise for wine production."

Washington side

Highly Recommended.

The Washington side has excellent wineries with superior Gorge views in Lyle, Wash. The Evergreen State is a mere five minutes across the old-fashioned, vertical-lift White Salmon Bridge, and the Memaloose Wines tasting room is 15 minutes east past fascinating geological features and expansive river views on the Lewis and Clark Highway. Try Memaloose’s esteemed cab franc ($25 a bottle) made from Columbia Gorge AVA grapes. Next, stop at COR Cellars, where the owner Luke Bradford will tell you about his quest to make the perfect lower-alcohol, higher-acidity malbec ($28 a bottle). Farther on, Syncline Wine Cellars was founded by a Mantone husband-wife team and named for a nearby geological feature, the Bingen Syncline. On the way back, don’t miss Domaine Pouillon’s artisan wines from Rhone variety grapes. All four tasting rooms are open weekends from around 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Just remember, you can continue the tour at a number of Oregon wineries including Springhouse Cellar, in a 1920s fruit cannery, and Viento, Cathedral  Ridge or Marchesi, on the western edge of town.

With more travel time, you may need to schedule 1 less winery.

Please let us know if you have an area or wineries preferences (Oregon and/or Washington).
